“General Motors announced that it would postpone producing its all-electric trucks for at least a year at a plant in Michigan.”
General Motors announced that it would postpone producing its all-electric trucks for at least a year at a plant in Michigan. To increase the profitability of the new EVs, the business stated that changes and better capital investment management were required.
GM will No Longer Produce Chevrolet Bolt EVs at Orion Assembly Factory
Rather than starting production of its next-generation electric vehicles at the Orion Assembly facility in suburban Detroit next year, General Motors has stated that it will begin doing so by the end of 2025. By the end of this year, Chevrolet Bolt EVs, which are now produced in the Orion Assembly factory, will no longer be produced.
The slow adoption of EVs, which are still costly to produce and purchase, has been a setback for traditional automakers’ ambitious plans to transition to electric vehicles, as evidenced by the latest delay.

General Motors said, “General Motors today confirmed it will retime the conversion of its Orion Assembly plant to EV truck production to late 2025, to better manage capital investment while aligning with evolving EV demand. In addition, we have identified engineering improvements that we will implement to increase the profitability of our products.”
The company’s continuing contract negotiations with the United Auto Workers union are unrelated to the plan adjustment. These discussions, however, are about electric cars (EVs), and the company’s latest plans are anticipated to come with a higher price tag than those from prior years. The UAW, which is the labour union for Orion Assembly employees, has not yet replied to remarks.
GM’s Delay Production Causes Doubts about Its Previously Stated EV Objectives
General Motors‘ production delay raises doubts about the company’s previously stated EV objectives, which included the production of 400,000 electric vehicles in North America from 2022 through mid-2024. This goal had already been postponed, and the delay adds to the uncertainty around GM’s ability to deliver on their plans. The automaker had also announced a target of solely offering electric vehicles to consumers by 2035.
