Bank of England Orders Review of Revolut Product Approvals

The Bank of England has reportedly requested an independent examination of Revolut’s internal product approval procedures, bringing attention to how the fast-growing fintech company manages its expanding banking operations in the United Kingdom. The reported review comes as Revolut develops new financial services and increases its presence in the traditional banking market.

Bank Regulator Reviews Revolut’s Approval Procedures

According to a Financial Times report published on October 27, 2026, the Bank of England’s Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) has ordered an independent review of Revolut’s processes for approving financial products.

The examination is intended to assess the company’s internal procedures and controls. As financial institutions introduce new services, they need reliable systems to evaluate potential risks, meet regulatory requirements and protect customers.

The review reportedly falls under Section 166 of the Financial Services and Markets Act, which allows UK financial regulators to request independent assessments of regulated firms. Such reviews can help identify areas where a company may need to improve its systems or strengthen its oversight.

The reported development does not automatically mean that Revolut has breached any regulations. The findings of the review will be important in understanding whether changes to its internal processes are necessary.

Revolut Expands Its UK Banking Services

Revolut has developed from a digital payments business into a financial services company offering a wider selection of products. Its services include international money transfers, currency exchange, payment accounts and other digital financial features.

Obtaining a full UK banking licence in March 2026 marked a significant development in the company’s plans to expand its banking activities. The licence creates opportunities to compete more directly with established financial institutions.

On October 26, Revolut also announced the introduction of unsecured personal loans for eligible UK customers. The new offering allows customers to borrow between £2,000 and £25,000, adding another service to its growing portfolio.

As its operations become more extensive, maintaining effective product approval procedures and risk management systems becomes increasingly important.

Why Internal Controls Matter in Banking

Financial products must be developed and introduced with appropriate safeguards. Banks need processes that help them evaluate risks, assess customer needs and ensure that new services comply with applicable requirements.

Independent reviews provide an opportunity to examine whether these procedures are working as intended. They may also identify gaps in oversight or recommend improvements to internal decision-making.

For Revolut, the reported examination comes at a time when its business is moving further into services traditionally associated with established banks. Strong governance will be important as the company manages this transition.

    What Happens Next for Revolut?

The review’s outcome could provide a clearer picture of Revolut’s internal approval arrangements and whether additional measures are needed. If weaknesses are identified, the company may be expected to address them in line with relevant regulatory requirements.

For customers, the broader concern is whether financial providers can continue introducing convenient digital services while maintaining appropriate safeguards and responsible lending standards.

The development also reflects the growing attention regulators pay to fintech companies as they take on more traditional banking activities. Revolut’s next steps will depend on the findings of the examination and any subsequent regulatory requirements.

As digital financial services continue to evolve, effective internal controls and transparent oversight will remain important for maintaining trust in the UK banking sector.
