GM Revives V-8 Engines as Truck Wars Heat Up with Ford, Ram

General Motors is putting renewed focus on gasoline power as competition in the full-size pickup market intensifies. The automaker has confirmed two new sixth-generation Small Block V-8 engines for the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500. The move gives truck buyers more powertrain choices as automakers continue to balance traditional truck demand with the changing market for electric vehicles.

New GM Engines Bring More Power for 2027

The new GM engine lineup includes a 5.7-liter V-8, known as the L76, and a 6.6-liter V-8, known as the L78. The 5.7-liter produces 402 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque, while the 6.6-liter delivers 481 horsepower and 501 lb-ft of torque. GM says the larger engine is the most powerful naturally aspirated V-8 in the light-duty truck segment.

These figures also clarify some earlier discussion around the 2027 Silverado 5.7L V8 rumor. Rather than remaining a rumor, the 5.7-liter engine has now been officially confirmed by General Motors.

2027 Silverado New Engines Focus on Capability

The new engines are designed for towing, hauling, everyday driving and off-road use. GM says the 5.7-liter V-8 can support a maximum towing capacity of up to 13,700 pounds in the Silverado 1500, depending on configuration. Both V-8 engines are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The engines also use a dual-fuel injection system combining direct and port injection. GM has introduced a revised lubrication system, continuously variable oil pump and on-engine oil cooler as part of the new architecture.

Statement: GM says the new V-8s are intended to provide increased power, torque and efficiency while supporting the everyday demands of full-size pickup customers.

2027 GMC Truck Engine Lineup Expands

The 2027 GMC truck engine lineup will offer four choices: the new 5.7L and 6.6L V-8 engines, an enhanced TurboMax and the Duramax 3.0L turbo-diesel.

The updated TurboMax produces 350 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque, while the Duramax diesel delivers 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque. GM says the diesel-equipped trucks can achieve more than 900 miles of highway range when combined with the available 34-gallon fuel tank, based on GM estimates.

GM, Ford and Ram Enter a New Truck Battle

The new engines arrive as the U.S. pickup market remains a major battleground for General Motors, Ford and Stellantis’ Ram brand. Reuters reports that GM is continuing with diesel and gasoline powertrains while Ford and Ram are expanding their use of hybrid technologies.

This makes the latest GM new engine strategy notable. Instead of moving its full-size truck lineup toward a single powertrain direction, the company is offering gasoline V-8s, turbocharged gasoline power and diesel options.

For buyers searching for fast trucks, the new 6.6-liter V-8 provides a higher-output option, although acceleration figures have not yet been announced by GM.

When Will the 2027 Silverado Be Revealed?

The redesigned 2027 Silverado was already introduced by Chevrolet in June 2026, so it is no longer awaiting its initial reveal. Chevrolet says the next-generation Silverado is expected to go on sale toward the end of 2026. The GMC Sierra 1500 is also scheduled for launch later this year.

What the New V-8s Mean for GM Trucks

The new V-8 engines mark a major update to GM’s traditional truck powertrain strategy. With 402 horsepower from the 5.7-liter and 481 horsepower from the 6.6-liter, the 2027 Silverado and Sierra will give customers additional gasoline-powered choices alongside diesel and turbocharged engines.

As the pickup market changes, GM is keeping the V-8 at the center of its next-generation truck lineup while adding updated technology, stronger output and multiple powertrain options. The 2027 Silverado and GMC Sierra are expected to reach dealers later in 2026, bringing the new engines into the next phase of the competition among America’s major truck brands.
